Active 8 is an online healthy lifestyle program for parents and carers of young children. The program is designed to help families learn about healthy habits, and includes a range of information and activities to help parents and carers feel confident while raising healthy children.
The Active8 program is delivered in two formats. Families can attend face-to-face group sessions or complete the program online in the comfort of their own home.
Programs that are delivered face-to-face in the community are run every week for 90mins over 10 weeks. Each week a team of health professionals will deliver sessions to parents and children together in fun interactive, game-based sessions.
If participating online, phone coaching with a health professional is scheduled once a fortnight. Support is given for topics such as fussy eating, screen time and being active as a family. Parents participate in a virtual group discussion on the alternate fortnight to phone coaching. The online format runs for 8 weeks.
Each week, parents and carers learn to develop new skills to create and maintain a healthy lifestyle for their family through healthy eating and physical activity.
The program covers a range of topics such as healthy snacks, family meals, fussy eating and play time. Families are provided with information and support to help make healthy food choices and be active as their children grow.
There will be a phone coaching appointment with your Active8 program coach every fortnight for up to 30 minutes. On alternating weeks to your phone coaching call, there will be a 45-minute virtual group discussion with other parents and carers that are participating in the Active8 program, facilitated by health professional.
Throughout the program you will have different targets to complete. Some of these will be slight changes to your everyday habits that won’t take much time, and others may require more time and planning.
The targets chart you will receive before the program starts outlines all the targets for the program, so you will have lots of time to plan the various activities.
Your Active8 coach will be able to support you and provide advice to help you get back on track.
No, but it should be someone who lives with the child and is responsible for their food planning, preparation and routines at home. Foster carers, aunts and uncles, grandparents etc. who are caring for a child are welcome to participate in the program in the parent/carer role.
As the Active8 program is designed to help the whole family to introduce healthy habits, we encourage other adults in the family to complete the online sessions and participate in phone coaching calls or virtual group discussions.
The Better Health Company designed and developed the Active8 program for Australian communities and continue to facilitate program implementation across Australia.
